This study deals with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : it relies on a survey achieved in july 2001, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according to prices and availability of oysters supplies. The duration until marketable size and mean mortalities seem to have increased since a preceding inquiry in 1986. The main constraint, affecting priorly the south border... |

Summer mortalities of young oysters have been studied in 1999 through the monitoring of a unique oyster batch distributed among 3 sites located from upstream of an estuary (Fort-Espagnol, Auray river) to downstream (Kerpenhir, Auray river) up to open bay (Men er Roué, Bay of Quiberon). Mortality and growth have been monitered in parallel with vitality indices, so as to try or identify periods of weakness of oysters. The spat grew from a mean weight of 3 g, in the beginning of May to around 35 g in November, without sharp differences between sites. The summer mortalities remained moderate (10 %) in the 2 most marine stations, whereas a light peak of mortality (15 %) was recorded in July in the most continental station. Any of the physico-chemical parameters... |

Chromosomes of six cupped oyster species were studied using karyometric analysis alter conventional Giemsa staining, and silver staining, Karyotypes of Crassotrea angulata (nine metacentric and one submetacentric chromosome pairs), C. sikamea (nine metacentric and one submetacentric chromosome pairs), C. virginica (eight metacentric and two submetacentric chromosome pairs), C, ariakensis (eight metacentric and two submetacentric chromosome pairs), C, gasar (six metacentric and four submetacentric chromosome pairs), and Saccostrea commercialis (eight metacentric and two submetacentric chromosome pairs) are distinguishable by the number and position of the submetacentric chromosome pair and by the location of nucleolus organizer regions, Comparative... |

The history of French oyster culture consists of a succession of developmental phases using different species, followed by collapses caused by diseases. The indigenous species Ostrea edulis was replaced first with Crassostrea angulata, then C. gigas. France is now the top producer and consumer of oysters in Europe, producing around 120,000 t of the cupped oyster C. gigas annually, and an additional 1500 t of the flat oyster O. edulis. Cupped oysters are produced all along the French coast from natural and hatchery spat. Various structures are used to collect spat from the wild. After a growing-on period, oysters are Cultivated by three main methods: (1) on-bottom culture in the intertidal zone or in deep water, (2) off-bottom culture in plastic mesh bags... |

The most known and certainly the most important contribution of genetics to the oyster indus try is the development of the triploid cupped oyster. Released for the first time in the 1980s, the triploid oyster has triplets of chromosomes instead of pairs. Currently, triploid oysters are obtained by crossing diploid and tetraploid oysters. These oysters are characterized by a near lack of milt in summer, which makes them generally popular with consumers, and by a faster growth, allowing a shorter production cycle. In parallel, the exploitation of natural resistance in the diversity of French oysters has been considered to improve the health of farmed populations which is a major challenge for the sustainability of aquaculture farms. Currently, the... |

This paper summarizes knowledge about relations between husbandry practices and oyster spat mortalities since 2008 in France. These relations are strictly analyzed from a panel of experiments set on the shore (in outdoor experiments) by Ifremer teams and technical institutes all over French coasts. Results show some practices are able to reduce spat mortality with some influencing factors relevant of spat quality (sanitary status, natural or genetic selection) or husbandry practices. Spat “free” of virus is able to survive up to 90% when it is isolated and confined in ponds or nursery, during an epidemic crisis. When outbreaks occurred in oyster beds, natural or nursery spat died in almost same proportions. In 2010, some studies conducted in Mediterranean... |

This study is the second part of a former report rapport Ifremer DRV/RST/RA/LCB/2002-08 dealing with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : the first report relied on a survey achieved in july 200l, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. Il is now completed by a last campaign of diving in october 2002, on 7 parcels out of the 18, still bearing the initial oysters. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according... |

The Aquaculture Resources department Mollusc Network (REMORA ) has been monitoring in 1994 like in 1993 the growth of homogeneous batches of Crassostrea gigas (initially 18 months old, same origin, same history, same size) in the main French production areas. The monitored parameters deal with growth, morphology, survival, composition and parasite infestations. The comparison between two rearing conditions (traditional bags versus wooden plate to which individuals were stuck) demonstrated like in 1993 improved growth rate (which could also be explained by the lower local density) and a tendency for the oysters to become wider on plates (which is probably related to the absence of shell erosion). Major regional characteristics are revealed by the analysis,... |

The monitoring network IFREMER/REMORA in Thau lagoon is assessing, on a yearly basis, mortality, growth and quality criteria distributed among 6 stations. Samplings are carried out in March, June, September and December. 2003 is a year with a very important mortality in Mèze and Marseillan area due to an anoxy and an anormal mortality at Bouzigues Nord in december. The growth rate is always better than others French oysters areas. Afnor index is high (beetwen 13.7 and 16.5 in december), so the totality of the oysters are classifed in "Spéciales". Polydora sp. Index is important but the initial stock was first infected. The valve quality is good, with no gelatine, except on Bouzigues South. |
